Midges

Midges are tiny insects with a wingspan of just 1-2mm. They suck blood from the skin causing itching and swelling that can last for several days. In summer they can reach vast numbers, especially in the Scottish Highlands and North Wales. Of the 30 species native to the UK, 5 bite. Unfortunately these 5 represent billions of midges! They love damp, cloudy, still days and aren't always put off by rain. They thrive around shorelines but it's difficult to escape them anywhere in summer except perhaps on sunny breezy days - their least favourite conditions. The Scottish midge is infamous for its number and the amount of irritation it causes. The midge season extends from the first hatch in Spring until late Autumn, but they will emerge at other times of the year if climatic conditions are right.
