Black or garden ant

An annual intruder to our homes and gardens. They seem to appear the minute the sun comes out. These are flying ants that hit us in late summer they embark on their nuptial flights when they become fertilised. They bite off their wings and build nests to prepare for their vast off-spring to come. They can continue laying eggs for 15 years! Worker ants look after the queens and nests. They're social creatures who communicate via their antennae. On finding sweet treasures a worker will return to the nest and pass some of the booty to his fellow workers. They will then follow a trial to the source of the riches.
